Family Bible Study
Based on Romans 8:5-11
Opening Prayer
Begin your group time by inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your discussion and open hearts to His leading.
Ice Breaker
Share about a time when you had to make an important decision. What process did you use to decide? Looking back, do you think you sought God's guidance adequately?
Key Takeaways from the Sermon
The Mind Matters: How we live our lives follows what our minds are set on.
Two Opposing Forces: The sinful nature leads to death; the Spirit leads to life and peace.
Impossible on Our Own: We cannot live the Christian life or please God through our own strength.
The Holy Spirit's Role: God gave us the Holy Spirit to empower us to live according to His will.
Evidence of New Life: Those controlled by the Spirit produce different fruit than those controlled by the flesh.
Scripture Review
Have someone read Romans 8:5-11 aloud, then read Galatians 5:19-23 for contrast.
Understanding the Text
The Contrast (Romans 7 vs. Romans 8): The sermon mentioned that "I" appears 30 times in Romans 7, but is replaced by "Spirit" in Romans 8. What does this shift tell us about the Christian life?
Hostile Minds (v. 7): Paul says the sinful mind is "hostile toward God." What does this mean practically? How have you experienced this hostility in your own life before coming to Christ?
Two Different Results (v. 6): Paul contrasts death with life and peace. What does "life and peace" look like in everyday experience? Share examples from your own life.
Personal Reflection
Mind Check: If someone examined what you think about most during the day, would they conclude your mind is set on "things of the flesh" or "things of the Spirit"? Be honest.
The Driving Illustration: Bro. Neil used the example of focusing on the road while driving. What are the "distractions" that pull your focus away from spiritual things? (Examples: phone, work stress, relationships, entertainment)
Fruit Inspection: Look at the lists in Galatians 5:19-21 (acts of the flesh) and 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit). Which list more accurately describes the pattern of your life right now? What does this reveal?
Applying the Truth
Decision Making: The sermon asked how we know we're making decisions according to God's will. What practical steps can you take to ensure you're seeking the Spirit's guidance before major (or minor) decisions?
The Impossibility Factor: The pastor emphasized we cannot live the Christian life on our own. Where are you currently trying to live in your own strength rather than depending on the Holy Spirit? What needs to change?
Spirit-Controlled vs. Flesh-Controlled: Romans 8:9 says if you don't have the Spirit, you don't belong to Christ. How would you explain to someone the difference between being religious and being controlled by the Spirit?
Forgiveness vs. Grudges: The sermon mentioned that the Spirit says to forgive while the flesh says to hold grudges. Is there someone you need to forgive? What is preventing you from doing so?
Practical Applications
This Week's Challenge
Choose one of the following to practice this week:
Option 1: Mind Renewal
Memorize Romans 8:6: "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
Each morning, ask the Holy Spirit to control your thoughts and decisions for that day.
Each evening, reflect on moments when you lived by the flesh vs. by the Spirit.
Option 2: Decision Filter
Before making any decision this week (big or small), pause and ask:
"Is this decision focused on earthly things or eternal things?"
"Am I seeking to please God or myself?"
"What would the Spirit lead me to do?"
Journal about what you discover.
Option 3: Fruit Examination
Review Galatians 5:19-23 daily.
Each day, identify one "act of the flesh" you need the Spirit's help to overcome.
Identify one "fruit of the Spirit" you want to cultivate and pray specifically for it.
Option 4: Spirit Dependency
Identify one area where you've been trying to live the Christian life in your own strength.
Confess your self-reliance to God and ask for the Holy Spirit's power.
Find an accountability partner in your group to pray with you about this area.
Reflection Questions for Deeper Study
For those who want to go deeper this week:
Read all of Romans 8 and note every reference to the Holy Spirit. What do you learn about the Spirit's role in your life?
The sermon mentioned Ezekiel 36:26-27. How does this Old Testament promise connect to what Paul teaches in Romans 8?
Romans 8:11 speaks of resurrection power. How should the same power that raised Jesus from the dead affect how you live today?
What is the relationship between being "in Christ" and having the Holy Spirit? (See Romans 8:1, 9-10)
Closing Questions
Accountability: Who in this group can you ask to check in with you this week about living by the Spirit?
Prayer Needs: What specific area do you need the Holy Spirit's power for right now?
Closing Prayer
Go around the circle and have each person pray for the person on their right, specifically asking that:
The Holy Spirit would control their mind and decisions
They would experience life and peace rather than spiritual death
God would give them power to overcome areas where the flesh is winning
They would walk in dependence on the Spirit, not their own strength
Looking Ahead
Next week, be prepared to share:
One way you saw the Spirit working in your life this week
One decision you made by seeking the Spirit's guidance rather than following the flesh
One area where you're still struggling and need continued prayer

Questions to Journal:
What does it practically mean for me to "set my mind on the things of the Spirit"?
How has my life changed since the Holy Spirit began living in me?
Where am I still living as if I don't have the Holy Spirit's power?
Remember: The Christian life is impossible to live on your own. That's why God gave you the Holy Spirit. Don't try to do it alone!
